Most days start at a shop or straight from the van with a dispatch list of service calls. A residential day might be four to six stops: a no-cool call where you check the thermostat, capacitor, contactor and refrigerant charge before finding a failed compressor; a maintenance visit cleaning coils, changing filters and checking static pressure; a heat-pump call where the real fault turns out to be a wiring problem in the air handler. You spend the day moving between the attic, the outdoor unit and the electrical panel, on gauges and a multimeter, explaining to a homeowner why the cheap fix is not the right one. Commercial and refrigeration work looks different: fewer sites, bigger equipment, rooftop units and walk-in coolers, more controls and building-automation troubleshooting, and higher stakes when a grocery case or a server room is down. Paperwork and photos close each job. Summer and winter peaks bring long days and on-call nights; shoulder seasons are quieter and lean more on installations and planned maintenance.
Is it worth it to be an HVAC Technician?
HVAC is one of the strongest remaining trades on the numbers: a median of $61,010 with no degree required, 8% projected growth, about 40,100 openings a year, and a genuinely cheap entry route if you can land an apprenticeship. The work is diagnostic rather than repetitive, it cannot be offshored, and the path to running your own contracting business is well trodden and lucrative. Who it is not for: the work is physically hard in exactly the conditions people avoid - attics in July, roofs in January - and peak season brings long hours and on-call nights, which is punishing if you need predictable evenings. Early pay is modest while you are an install helper, and progression depends on getting service diagnostic experience, which not every employer offers. If you dislike being on call, cannot tolerate confined spaces or heat, or want desk-based work, skip it. If you like solving mechanical and electrical puzzles and want a licence-backed trade with a business at the end of it, it is one of the best-value careers in this catalogue.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Enrolling in a program before checking your own state and city licensing rules - requirements vary enormously, and some states need documented experience that a classroom program does not provide.
- Paying a private school $20,000 for a credential a local community college awards for a fraction of that, when the EPA 608 certification you end up with is identical.
- Taking only Type II certification because that is what the current job needs, then having to re-sit for Universal when you move to commercial refrigeration. Take all sections at once - it never expires.
- Turning down an apprenticeship because the starting wage looks low, without pricing in zero tuition, no debt and the documented hours a licence requires.
- Staying on installation because it is comfortable. Service and diagnostics is where the wage range widens, so ask for that rotation early.
- Underestimating seasonality when budgeting - hours can swing hard between peak summer or winter and the shoulder seasons, especially at smaller residential firms.
- Skimping on your own hand tools and meters. Employers supply the big recovery equipment but rarely a full personal kit, and cheap meters cost you diagnostic time.

An apprenticeship is financially better: no tuition, a wage from day one, and the documented experience most licences require. Trade school is faster to a credential and easier to enter if no local sponsor is hiring, which is the real constraint - apprenticeship places are competitive and not evenly available. Many technicians end up doing both, taking a short program and then an apprenticeship or helper role.
