Both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography are NHS Learning Support Fund-eligible courses, so most students can claim a non-means-tested £5,000-a-year training grant that never has to be repaid, plus extra payments for childcare and travel to placements. The degree apprenticeship route costs the learner nothing and pays a wage throughout. On qualifying you pay the HCPC an £86.34 one-off application fee, then a £123.34-a-year renewal fee (halved for UK graduates in their first two post-qualifying years). Society and College of Radiographers membership is optional and charged separately.

A day in the life of a Radiographer
A diagnostic radiographer's day might move between A&E trauma X-rays, a CT list, and patients referred by GPs for routine imaging, reassuring anxious or injured patients while positioning them precisely and checking image quality before they leave. A therapeutic radiographer's day is built around a fixed list of cancer patients returning daily or weekly for the same course of radiotherapy — checking positioning against a treatment plan to sub-millimetre accuracy, monitoring side effects, and building a relationship with patients over weeks of treatment. Both roles involve protective equipment, ionising-radiation safety procedures, and close teamwork with radiologists, oncologists and other clinical staff.
Is it worth it to be a Radiographer?
Worth it if you want a hands-on clinical role built on precision and technology rather than years of undergraduate lecture-heavy study, with a genuine choice between fast-paced diagnostic imaging (including trauma and A&E work) and the closer, longer-term patient relationships of therapeutic (cancer) radiography. It's not for you if you're squeamish about radiation safety procedures, dislike shift work and on-call rotas (diagnostic imaging especially), or would find seeing the same cancer patients daily through a course of treatment emotionally heavy — that sustained closeness is specific to therapeutic radiography and catches some applicants by surprise.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing 'radiographer' with 'radiologist' — a radiographer takes the scan or delivers the radiotherapy; a radiologist is a doctor who interprets images and diagnoses. Mixing them up in a personal statement is a red flag to admissions tutors.
- Applying without deciding diagnostic vs therapeutic first — the two are separate degree courses with different placements and, later, different career paths; you can't easily switch after starting without largely retraining.
- Underestimating the emotional weight of therapeutic (oncology) radiography specifically — you see the same cancer patients daily throughout a course of treatment, a different experience from the shorter diagnostic-imaging encounters most applicants picture.
- Assuming the job is desk-based scan-reading — radiographers position and reassure patients, work in physically awkward postures around equipment, and, in diagnostic imaging, frequently cover A&E trauma call-outs and night shifts.
- Not checking a course is HCPC-approved before applying — an imaging-adjacent degree, such as medical physics or imaging science, that isn't on the HCPC's approved programme list will not make you eligible to register or use the protected title.
- Forgetting radiation protection training is ongoing, not a one-off — IRR17/IRMER competency is refreshed throughout your career, and lapsed CPD can affect HCPC renewal.

What's the difference between a radiographer and a radiologist?
A radiographer is an HCPC-registered allied health professional who operates the imaging equipment, or delivers radiotherapy, and works directly with patients. A radiologist is a medical doctor who has specialised in interpreting scans and diagnosing from them. They work closely together, but the training routes, regulatory bodies and pay structures are entirely different.
Diagnostic or therapeutic radiography — which should I choose?
Diagnostic radiographers produce and interpret initial images (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy) across a wide range of departments including A&E. Therapeutic radiographers specialise in planning and delivering radiotherapy for cancer patients over a course of treatment, working closely with oncologists. Both are separate three-year BSc courses — you choose when you apply, and switching later usually means retraining.
Is a science A-level essential?
Most courses ask for at least one science A-level (biology, chemistry or physics) alongside 4-5 GCSEs including English, maths and science. Some universities accept a strong Access to HE diploma with a science component instead.
Do radiographers work night shifts?
Diagnostic radiographers in acute hospitals typically work a 37-40 hour week including evenings, weekends, bank holidays and on-call rotas for trauma imaging. Therapeutic radiography services are generally more predictable, running standard working hours, since radiotherapy is scheduled treatment rather than emergency care.
How much do radiographers get paid in the NHS?
Newly qualified radiographers typically start on NHS Agenda for Change Band 5 (£32,073-£39,043 from April 2026), moving to Band 6 (£39,959-£48,117) with experience, and Band 7+ in specialist or advanced practice roles, plus High Cost Area Supplements in and around London.
